The first university in Europe was founded by Muslims in Andalusia in 227 AH 841 AD
Since then, the Arab dress, the “abaya” and the hat, have become the graduation dress in all universities in the world, until the present time.
The graduation cap was made flat because the Holy Qur’an was placed on top of it in the graduation ceremony. When European students graduated, they would wear Arab dress when they returned to their countries and speak Arabic as a sign of their learning. In Andalusia, the person became a scholar who graduated from Arab universities.
Jack Goody said in the book: Islam in Europe: Arab dress and the Arabic language became a sign of prestige for science at that time.
